10 Indonesian Arts and Cultures Recognized by UNESCO

Indonesia is a country with rich of cultures and tribes. There are at least 1300 of cultures spreading all over Indonesia lands from the Sabang (most western city of Indonesia) to Merauke (most eastern city of Indonesia).

UNESCO is stands for United Nations of Education Social Culture Organization. It is a sub organization under the United Nations that cover education, social, and cultural issues and problems.

Here are the ten culturals of Indonesia which already recognized by UNESCO as precious world cultural heritages:
  1. Wayang Kulit
  2. Keris
  3. Angklung
  4. Gamelan
  5. Batik
  6. Noken
  7. Subak Bali
  8. Sekaten
  9. Tari Saman
  10. Lumpia

Arts and cultural of Indonesia which recognized by UNESCO


From hundreds or thousands of culturals from Indonesia, there is just a little of them which alrweady got attention by world communities. These culturals are recognized by UNESCO and they are come from many form like traditions, show, events, music, foods, etc.

Not that maybe there is still other culturals from Indonesia which is missed by me on this post because the limitations of time or my knowledge for the creation of this post.

Wayang Kulit


Wayang kulit

Wayang Kulit is definitely cannot be separated from the Javanese people because since long ago Wayang Kulit is a traditional show often held on the Javanese regions. On a Wayang Kulit traditional show, there will be a "Dalang" (puppeteer) who will played the wayang (the puppet) act, the gamelan (a traditional drum) player, music instruments which will fill along the show, and "Sinden" as the singer. The stories used in a Wayang Kulit show usually has background from the Hindu tales like Mahabharata, Ramayana, or story about Panji.

On the progress, Wayang Kulit still become an important Indonesian cultural which must be preserved, and it is proved on the 2003 year, UNESCO register Wayang Kulit as a precious and beautiful cultural heritage from Indonesia.

Keris


Keris

Keris is one of cultural filled object from Indonesia that exist since in the past, Keris used as a weapon in duel. Keris has unique shapes, sharp like dagger in the tip and wavy in the sides.

Not only in Java region, Keris has also spread around outside Java region like in Madura, Sumatra, Kalimantan (Borneo), Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi. Every regions has its own identity and uniqueness of its Keris. Today, Keris has changed its functionality as a traditional uniform accessories like traditional wedding uniform or as collectable antiques object. Then, on the 2005 year, Keris has crowned as world cultural heritage from Indonesia by UNESCO.

Angklung


Angklung

Now there is a traditional music instrument from my region, Sunda. Angklung Angklung is a traditional musical instruments from Sunda region, West Java. This musical instruments is made from bamboo and has shapes like pipe. It's very easy to play it, only by shaking the Angklung, and every Angklung sizes has differents sounds.

Today, Angklung is not only used and growth in West Java, but Angklung also has spread to regions near Sunda (West Java), and it proved by varieties of Angklung existing now like "Angklung reog" and "Angklung banyuwangi". Ever had claimed by neighbors country, finally Angklung was officially recognized as cultural heritage from Indonesia by UNESCO on 2010 year.

Gamelan


Gamelan

Gamelan is compiled from many musical instruments like saron, gambang, gendang, and gong and it's very represents the Indonesia identity. Growth in the Hindu-Buddha era, Gamelan became a traditional musics often to accompanied the Java cultural show or ritual and other cultural like Bali that will play along the show, and will make guests attended become glad to hear the calming music sounds of Gamelan.

Gamelan is languange itself has meaning of "wasping musical instruments" because it played by wasped only by trainee people. To keep Gamelan conserved, government of Indonesia submitted Gamelan as Indonesian cultural heritage, and on 2014 UNESCO has officially recognized it.

Batik


Batik

Batik is became a required clothing on many occasions in Indonesia. Batik at the first was made by drawed using a tool called "canting" using melted candles as the tint since long ago. There is so many Batik motives in Indonesia comes from different regions like "Batik Jogja", "Batik Solo", "batik Kalimantan", "batik Lampung", etc.

And now, Batik has modified to become more modern using faster and more efficient production methods like using stamp technique. To patent this traditional clothing art, the government submitted Batik to UNESCO, and on the 2009 year UNESCO was officialy recognized Batik as the world cultural heritage.

Noken


Noken

Noken is one of cultural arts from Papua islands which it is a traditional bag. Noken Bag is made from dried tree bark, unspunned to a yarn, and then wattled. The Papua people using their head for bringing goods to their kids.

Noken Bag is a traditional bag usually made by women, and the capability of creating this Noken Bag also become a symbol of a woman that she is grew up and ready for marriage. Because it can only be found in Papua, the Indonesian government was submitted Noken Bag to UNESCO, and it is recognized as cultural heritage on December 4, 2014.

Subak Bali


Subak bali

Subak in Bali is a traditional irrigation system to divides the irrigation water on the rice fields by Balinese. On Subak system, the farmer interests is very prioritised so it can get maximum results of harvest. This system is great applicated in farming to increase the harvest output from local people who depend their life on farming, moreover if the dry season come or pest invade the fields in Indonesia which the season is changes in some interval of months.

Finally, Subak system from Bali was recognized as cultural heritage on 2004 year by UNESCO.

Sekaten


Sekaten

Sekaten is a traditonal event held to welcome the Isra’ Miraj or the birth day of Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW. Sekaten is held at north square of Keraton in Surakarta city and also at the north square of Keraton in Jogjakarta city. There is some even parts in Sekaten, one of the parts is the final part where people are scramble for a mount-shaped harvest goods which paraded before.

Because it has very high cultural values, Sekaten was recognized as cultural heritage from Indonesia by UNESCO on 2014 year.

Tari Saman


Tari saman

Tari saman or also called "Tari Saman Gayo" is a traditional dance from Aceh province. Tari saman is a dance consist a group of lining people sitting cross-legged and has unique movement and it is deep of philosophy. Tari Saman dance coreography main movement is placed on the usage of hands.

Usually, this dance is presented on special events, example when greeting important guests, the local people will training or hire a group from local Tari Saman dancers to perform in front of the special guests. Finally on 2011 year, Tari Saman has officially recognized became cultural heritage of Indonesia.

Lumpia


Lumpia

Not only crafts, music, dance, and events, Lumpia which is a food had also recognized as a cultural heritage by UNESCO. Actually, the food which contain cuts of white noodle, vegetables, meat, or seafood inside it is come from China at the first. But later it taken to Indonesia and the local people had modify it in many ways so now the taste and flavour is closer to Indonesian people tounge.

And because the Lumpia food exist in Indonesia now is the modified version by Indonesian flavour and it then became more popular in Indonesia. And so, on the 2014 year, UNESCO had recognized Lumpia as one of Indonesian cultural heritage.
