Indonesia is a huge country with many terrains and conditions from crowded street traffic, alley ways, rocky area, swampy area, etc. So if we want to reach a destination with better time or we just want to enjoy the trip and the views, we can choose the right one of many transportation methods there based on needs.

The transportations vehicles also has many kinds and unique on each regions. And you may even will not find same transports like these exist in Indonesia. Start from very olds kind using animals to more modern kinds like cars and bikes.

And one thing we must remember that some transports are only exist on some little places. Example Delman which using a horse, of course you will not find them in a downtown. And Angkot which is a car, it is likely you won't find them in green-tourism places or thin streets.

Delman

This transportation using Horse as the "motor", it was named to its founder / creator, he is Charles Theodore Deeleman who a litographer and professor on the Netherland-Indische era. The Dutch called this transportation as "dos-à-dos", that is a kind of cart where the passengers sit turned back each other.

The "dos-à-dos" term later shortened by the local natives as "sado". In others Indonesia's provinces, Delman has also called "Andong" with its four wheeled. In Jakarta city, Delman is also called as "ebro" which taken from abbreviation of Eerste Bataviasche Rijtuig Onderneming which has meaning of the first cart companies in Jakarta.

Ojek Sepeda

Ojek Sepeda, was an exellent transport of Indonesian people since 70's year. Long ago, this transport is one of main choice from transports methods, but on a modern era like now Ojek Sepeda has slowly forgotten.

Today, we still can feels to use this rare and unique transport at the Tanjung Priuk Terminals or at the intersection of Train Station in Jakarta city (Beos) and maybe on some alley way areas in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta city.

Cidomo

Cidomo or often called "Cimodok" is a horse-powered transport vehicle specialties of Lombok island. Psyhicsly, it looked like Delman or Andong found in Java islands. The main difference with Delman or Andong is rather than using wood-made wheels, Cidomo is using ex-cars wheels instead.

Untill now this transports method is still become the main transportation choice on areas where public transportation is still unreachable and also on the areas at heart of economic activity like traditional market.

Becak

Becak is a third-wheeled transports method which is very casual in Indonesia. The capacity of Becak is only could carry two passengers at maximum and a driver.

In Indonesia there is two kinds of Becak usually operates:
  • Becak with driver on the back. This kind is usually found in Java islands.
  • Becak with driver on the side. This kind is usually found in Sumatera islands.

Pedati

Pedati is a traditional vehicle or object which has two or four wheels that used as transports to carry people, or objects. What makes difference with Delman, Pedati, and Cidomo is that Pedati usually found could be run with the help of difference animals like horse, cow, or even goat. Pedati commonly are exist only on the countryside regions.

Becak Mesin actually is an ordinary Becak like previous I told, but it's using a motor or a motorcycle to move it. Becak Mesin could be found easily in North Sumatera province, and looking to what used to move it, it also often called as "Becak Motor". Becak Mesin is a very popular transports method in North Sumatera and can be used for door to door trip.

Dokar is also one of old Indonesia's traditional transports. Dokar has differences with Andong or Delman. Dokar has four wheels and pulled by one or two horses, meanwhile Andong or Delman has two wheels and pulled by only one horse.

The existence of Dokar as one of Javanese cultural heritage has gave own uniqueness to tourism places like Parangtritis Beach, Jogjakarta Kidul Squares, or Malioboro street in Jogjakarta province, Indonesia.

Bentor is a typical transportation of Gorontalo province. The idea of Bentor is come from a Becak on the front and a motorcycle on the back. Bentor also has operate illegally in many cities like Makasar, Kotamobago, Bolaang Mongondow in North Sulawesi province, and Luwuk in Middle Sulawesi province.

Bentor is favorited by peoples because it could reach the destination in fast time and could bring two people, three people, or even five people simultaneously with the last two people are sit behind the driver chair.

"Angkutan kota" (city transports) is abbreviated to ANGKOT. It is a city transportation methods with assigned destination routes.
